Brownfields Environmental Job Training

This Brownfields Job Training Program is the result of an EPA investment and a partnership of the City of Tacoma, Clover Park Technical College, and Goodwill. It is a five-week program that offers multiple certifications and training for entry-level positions in the environmental sciences and construction fields. An application and assessment are required prior to taking this class.

Course Description

This in-person course prepares job seekers for entry-level employment in environmental remediation and construction-related fields. You will be introduced to core concepts in environmental science, site safety, and equipment handling, with certifications in areas such as HAZWOPER, OSHA 10, and asbestos abatement. The course blends hands-on instruction with industry-recognized credentials, offering a solid foundation for a sustainable career.

What We'll Cover

  • Career and Skills Assessment
    Assess your current abilities and identify environmental career pathways aligned with your strengths and interests. 
  • Environmental Safety and Regulations
    Learn the key regulations, protocols, and responsibilities related to environmental cleanup, hazardous materials, and site remediation. 
  • Construction and Equipment Basics
    Gain foundational knowledge of tools, materials handling, and machinery used in environmental and construction job sites. 
  • HAZWOPER and OSHA Standards
    Complete your 40-hour HAZWOPER and OSHA 10 training to prepare for work in regulated environments and ensure safety compliance. 
  • Certifications for Field-Ready Work
    Earn credentials in forklift operation, flagging, First Aid/CPR, asbestos work, and lead renovation, repair, and painting (Lead RRP). 
  • Teamwork and Emergency Response
    Develop skills in communication, situational awareness, and emergency preparedness for working in teams on dynamic job sites. 
  • Job Search Support
    Receive guidance in resume development, interview preparation, and connection to employment opportunities with environmental and construction employers.

  • Must be 18 years or older 
  • Tacoma/Pierce Co. resident 
  • Washington State ID 
  • Reliable transportation 
  • HS diploma or equivalent
